Cold Start to 2013

Winter has finally struck Kinross over the last few days, with thick snow on the ground defeating the hardiest of golfers – even fluorescent golf balls would not help!

snow

Weather such as this leaves the green keeping team with little to do than concentrate on giving all the golf course machinery machinery a really good service in preparation for the forthcoming season.  It also gives them a bit of a breather as the last couple of months have been fairly full on in terms of working on the 2 courses.

For the first time, we have operated a composite course during the winter months (November – February inclusive).  In order to facilitate a lot of work on the courses during this period, we confined play to 14 holes on The Bruce (holes 1-7 and 12-18) followed by 4 holes on The Montgomery to finish off (hole 1 and 16-18).  This arrangement appears to have worked pretty well this year with golfers being able to play more often, and on full greens, than has been the case in previous years.  This composite course looks as though it may become our winter standard.

The main priority this winter has been to install a considerable amount of new drainage on the lower lying holes closest to Loch Leven.  Two wet years in succession have caused problems with saturated turf which we needed to resolve if possible.  Early indications are that the new drainage is definitely having a positive effect on those areas where it has been installed.  We have also taken the opportunity to bring mechanical diggers in to clean out the ditches that criss-cross the courses so as to try to ensure that they too are doing their bit to facilitate drainage.  Damaged areas have been returfed.

A second project has involved creating 7 new Ladies tees on The Montgomery & The Bruce.  A committee of Lady Members of the club had produced a well researched and thought out paper looking at how the two courses could be improved in terms of a playing experience for Lady golfers.  The repositioning of various tees has meant that some holes have been lengthened and others shortened so that the holes play better.  The new tees will be brought into operation in early summer.

With the start of the new season really now just a couple of months away, there is still a great deal of work to be done and I suppose that we ought to be hoping that the current arctic blast proves fairly short-lived so that we can get back to work in earnest!

Corporate Golf Day Opportunities at Kinross

In many ways, Kinross offers the ideal venue for companies to stage Golf Days for staff and clients.

1.  We have two lovely 18 hole parkland golf courses available, providing greater flexibility and choice. The Montgomery is perhaps the more challenging of the two, measuring 6508 yards off the white tees (Par 72, SSS 72), but The Bruce is certainly no pushover despite being slightly shorter at 6231 yards (Par 73, SSS 72).  Interestingly, when we have polled visitors in the past, opinion is almost exactly divided between which they enjoyed the most.

2.  The two courses form part of the Green Hotel Golf & Leisure Resort with its 2 hotels (The Green Hotel And The Windlestrae) and their broad range of facilities just a very short walk from the 1st tees. The proximity of the hotels, together with their range of meeting rooms, function rooms and dining options, means that companies can organise their days to best suit their requirements (prize-givings, dinners etc).  Crucially, everything is available on site which just makes everything so much easier for organisers.

3.  Kinross is also ideally located in Central Scotland, just off Junction 6 of the M90 motorway. Perth is 15 minutes up the motorway, Edinburgh 30 mins away and Glasgow is less than an hour. If companies are having guests coming from various parts of Scotland and are looking at a map to find the most convenient location, Kinross is pretty much where most people would probably stick the pin!

4.  Perhaps most importantly, we offer some of the best value Corporate Golf Day packages in Scotland.

Exclusive use of either The Montgomery or Bruce Courses at Kinross for the day – £2,750*

New Golf Sales Executive for Kinross Golf Courses

We would very much like to welcome Lyn Hodgson as the new Golf Sales Executive here at Kinross.  She has taken over from Wilma Hegarty who retired last autumn.

Lyn originally hails from Kirkcaldy butthen spent 28 years exiled down south before returning north last September.  She joined us originally as a receptionist at the resort but it soon became apparent that she was ideally suited to take on this demanding golf role for us…. and she has taken to it like a duck to water!  As you can sense from the photo (for which she was a somewhat reluctant subject!), she has a lovely bubbly personality with a smile rarely absent.

Whilst she is in overall charge of all golf bookings, her primary role will be to help organise golf outings for groups and societies, corporate golf days and charity golf events from the initial enquiry all the way through to the day itself.  As much as possible, she will be on hand during the day of the outing to ensure that the golf, catering etc are provided for and that everyone has a thoroughly enjoyable here with us at Kinross.

She is undoubtedly a great addition to the team and we wish her well.

If you would like to get in contact with Lyn to discuss your golfing requirements, you can email her at lynhodgson@green-hotel.com or telephone 01577 864367.

Great NEW Deals for Golf Groups & Societies at Kinross in 2012

There are plenty of excellent clubs and courses in Scotland that provide suitable services and facilities for golf groups societies. So what makes Kinross such a popular choice? First, we have two lovely 18 hole parkland courses and there’s a great debate at Kinross: which course will your group enjoy the most? From what we can deduce from feedback over recent years, the jury is split. Continue reading

Hurricane Force Winds Cause New Year Damage

What a difference a year makes!  This time last year, the Kinross golf courses were knee deep in snow and had been in that state for 6 weeks.  High pressure was anchored over Scotland.  This winter has seen the opposite with low pressure systems streaming in one after another from the Atlantic.  The result has been a generally very mild winter but with lots of rain and blasts of storm force winds.  It has almost made us long for snow and ice again! Despite the fairly miserable weather on the day, a very impressive field of 130 golfers took part including 11 juniors.  Continue reading
